Pushing Through
By Beckham Factor (unedited)
On September 10th, a tragedy unfolded at Evergreen High School that left two students critically wounded and the community devastated. This last week of updates has brought confusion, anger, sadness, but most importantly, hope.
There were two students who were injured during the shooting, one of them being Matthew Silverstone. The other student’s family is requesting privacy to help better care for their child. Both students have received dozens of cards from classmates and community members, and their families have stated time and time again their gratitude.
Matthew and the other student both face a long road to recovery, and the ongoing support of the entire community is crucial during this process. They are still in critical condition according to the Jeffco County Sheriff Department, however, their conditions have improved in the last week. Make sure to continue sending cards, prayers, and messages to Matthew’s family, as they help lift their spirits in this tough time. There are many ways for you to be involved- something as simple as writing a letter to Matthew or the other student could mean the world to those who are struggling.
Right now, no actions are too small, and any help offered is appreciated. You can show your support by creating art pieces for the community wall at Center for the Arts, or by even just praying for their families and wishing them the best. Matthew’s family also has a GoFundMe active to help pay for his medical bills, which will be put at the bottom of this article. Any donation, however small, makes a difference.
“During hard times, you have to not only connect with others around you, but also yourself,” says Caddis Tofolo, a junior at EHS. “Make sure that your needs are met, and that no matter what, you keep doing what you love and not let obstacles of life get in the way of that.” Just because you weren't injured, doesn't mean you’re necessarily alright. Remember, Evergreen is a resilient community, and everyone around you wants to help you. This tragedy has been tough on us all, but if we stay strong as one, united town, we will overcome it together.
